Privilege check
When a Dreamer meets Insomnia: Poems from a first gen Unafraid to pick up a pen
Privilege check
Because
In present society,
Perception is reality
Recognizing the privilege
That proximity to whiteness
Sometimes affords me
The ability to choose
One or the other
Even unconsciously
Even if I don’t exactly fit
Even if I’m just being me
What meets the eye
Is actually reality
Meaning,
Others choose for me
Right when they see me
Sometimes it aligns
Sometimes it does not
The product in question is me
A product of the system,
One that picked me
Unknowing that my Black ancestors
Were deep rooted within me
And that as the system attempts to
Mold me,
Their collective voice continues to
Uphold me
As I them
